Overview

Mike is an associate in the Vorys Cleveland and Akron offices and a member of the intellectual property (IP) group.  He has a background in electrical engineering and technical experience with systems testing and automation.  Additionally, he has previous experience in the roles of patent engineer and patent agent.  Mike has worked with companies of all sizes to obtain patent protection for various technologies, not limited to artificial intelligence, integrated circuit design and manufacturing, distributed systems, power electronics, autonomous vehicles and medical imaging devices.  To obtain patent protection, Mike drafts, files and prosecutes patent applications at the United States Patent and Trademark Office and works with foreign counsel to advise on international protection.  He also counsels on patentability of inventions and renders Freedom to Operate (FTO) opinions.

Mike additionally counsels clients on broader intellectual property portfolio strategy and monetization.  Mike has filed numerous varieties of patent applications, including utility and design patent applications, and has helped clients identify appropriate intellectual property protections such as patents, trade secrets and trademarks.  Putting these intellectual property rights to work, Mike has also helped enforce intellectual property rights against competitors at the USPTO, on e-commerce platforms and in United States District Courts.  At the USPTO, Mike has worked on inter partes reviews (IPRs) and reexamination proceedings to contest validity of patents held by competitors.

Mike received his J.D. from the Cleveland State University College of Law.  He received his bachelor’s in electrical engineering and a minor in mathematics from Cleveland State University.
