Smallwood Receives Excellence in Public Service Award

Carl D. Smallwood, a partner in the firm’s Columbus office, is the recipient of the inaugural Ohio State Moritz College of Law Public Interest Law Foundation (PILF) Excellence in Public Service Award.  He was selected as the private sector honoree for his work as president of the Law and Leadership Institute, which prepares students from underserved communities for post-secondary and professional success through a comprehensive four-year academic program focused on analytical thinking, problem solving, writing, professionalism, law and leadership.

PILF is a non-political, non-profit organization dedicated to promoting legal involvement in the public sector. Recipients of the Excellence in Public Service Award were selected based on their influence and impact on the Columbus and greater Ohio community.

Smallwood is a member of the Vorys litigation practice group.  He represents clients in litigation, arbitration and mediation of employment-related injury, wrongful termination, professional negligence and toxic exposure disputes.  Smallwood also appears throughout Ohio on behalf of self-insured and state-funded employers in the defense of intentional tort and retaliatory discharge litigation arising under the Ohio Workers' Compensation Act and serves as trial counsel to several companies defending asbestos products liability litigation.

Smallwood received his J.D. from The Ohio State University Michael E. Moritz College of Law and his B.S. from The Ohio State University where he was Beta Gamma Sigma.
