Vorys Expands State and Local Tax Practice with Addition of Experienced Partner Kelvin Lawrence

Vorys announced today that Kelvin M. Lawrence, an experienced attorney with nearly two decades of experience in state and local tax matters, has joined the firm as a partner in the Columbus office. Lawrence brings deep experience advising business owners, real estate developers, health care systems, and tax-exempt organizations on complex state and local tax issues and multi-state tax controversies.

“Vorys has an unparalleled reputation in state and local tax and I am excited to join such an extensive team of talented professionals,” said Lawrence. “I look forward to working together to help our clients navigate tax challenges and achieve their business goals.”

Lawrence counsels clients on the tax aspects of business transactions, including pre-sale due diligence and purchase agreement tax provisions, and has secured significant tax refunds for clients through audits, appeals, and compliance efforts before state and local taxing authorities. He also regularly represents clients in Ohio property tax valuation appeals, exemption applications, and controversies involving sales, entity transfers, tax abatements; as well as sales and use tax, commercial activity tax, and pass-through entity tax matters.

“We feel fortunate to welcome Kelvin to Vorys,” said Tony Ehler, chair of the firm’s tax group. “His two decades of experience representing clients on state and local tax engagements and his leadership on tax matters at both the Ohio and American bar associations strengthens our team.  Kelvin extends our ability to deliver exceptional service to clients and we are thrilled he has joined us.”

Lawrence is recognized for his leadership in the tax bar and is active in several professional organizations, including the American Bar Association Section of Taxation and the Ohio State Bar Association. He is a frequent speaker and author on state and local tax topics and has been published in Bloomberg Tax. Lawrence has been recognized in The Best Lawyers in America for Tax Law.

Lawrence earned his J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School and his B.A. summa cum laude from Florida A&M University.
