38th Annual ABA Annual RPTE National CLE Conference

Jen Dunsizer, a partner in the Vorys Columbus office and a member of the labor and employment group, moderated a panel at the American Bar Association's Annual RPTE National CLE Conference on April 30 in Chicago.  The title of the panel was "Retirement Plan Beneficiary Designations: Making Sure Assets End Up Where You and Your Client Want Them.”

This panel explored what issues can (and cannot) be fixed regarding incorrect or unintended beneficiary designations with respect to tax-favored accounts (such as retirement plans, IRAs and HSAs).  Attendees learned about the issues that can arise from inaccurate beneficiary designations, reviewed the special rules for spouses that allow assets passing to an estate to avoid the RMD non-designated beneficiary rules, and gained perspective of and practical tips for working with plan administrators and custodians when beneficiary designations are not ideal.
