COVID-19 Implications on Higher Education

Institutions of higher education are navigating unprecedented challenges as the world reacts to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.  The last several weeks have presented a myriad of developments from federal relief acts to statewide orders.  The entire model of education and campus living has been upended as universities have been forced to suddenly move classes online and move students off campus.  Many have been forced to furlough their workforces and assess options for future workplace reductions, and institutions across the country are assessing the various federal and state relief potentially available to help with the anticipated financial burden caused by this crisis.

In the midst of these challenges, local governments and hospitals have contacted universities, asking them to provide their now empty dorms as housing for individuals who need to quarantine or isolate.  It is a stressful time for our university clients on many fronts, and we want you to know that we are here for you – at all times – to help you through this in any way we can.

Vorys lawyers are dedicated to doing whatever is necessary to stay educated on the issues impacting our clients, and we are tracking developments to be able to respond immediately to your needs.  Indeed, in addition to being able to respond immediately to your specific university needs, our firm is working around the clock to remain educated on the rapidly changing regulations and other issues arising in the areas of labor and employment, employee benefits, health care, financial lending, tax, environmental, and corporate, among others.

Nobody is immune from the effects of this pandemic, and institutions of higher education are no exception.  As always, we are here to assist you through this difficult time.  Please contact your Vorys attorney or a member of the Vorys higher ed team with specific questions.
