Surabian Joins Vorys

Vorys, Sater, Seymour and Pease LLP announced today that Jay A. Surabian has joined the firm as an associate in the Washington, D.C. office. Surabian, who prior to joining Vorys served as the assistant general counsel for the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development in Washington, D.C., will practice in the firm’s finance, energy and real estate group.

“We’re excited to welcome Jay to Vorys,” said Sean Purcell, the managing partner of the Vorys Washington office. “Jay spent more than a decade working for the District of Columbia on real estate, planning and economic development matters. His experience is truly unique and will strengthen the real estate practice both in Washington and across the firm.”

Surabian’s legal practice will focus on advising clients on real estate finance, real estate development, economic development incentives and tax credit transactions.

Surabian spent five years working with the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development. During this time, he represented the D.C. government’s real estate development agency in complex real estate transactions for projects totaling over $1.5 billion dollars in development costs. This work included providing legal advice on all aspects of the disposition, development, and financing of real estate projects and coordinating with developers and government agencies to resolve regulatory issues. Before taking on his economic development role, Surabian spent nearly six years working as an assistant attorney general in the Office of the Attorney General for D.C. where he advised District government agencies on various real estate, zoning and land use issues. For his work in the office, he received the D.C. Attorney General’s Exemplary Service Award in 2009 and 2011 and the Special Service Award in 2012.

Surabian received his J.D. cum laude from Suffolk University Law School, where he served as a note editor for the Suffolk Journal of Trial and Appellate Advocacy. He received his B.A. from Boston College.
