Reisz Featured in Columbus Business First Story on HIPAA Compliance

Lisa Pierce Reisz, a partner in the Vorys Columbus office and a member of the health care and litigation groups, was featured in a Columbus Business First story titled “HIPAA means business for health IT law.”  The story was about the Final Omnibus HIPAA Rule that strengthened the HIPAA enforcement capabilities of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

The story states:

“Reisz is a partner at Vorys and considered one of its go-to people on health-care privacy and security issues. She says many health-care entities have been proactive in ensuring they are totally HIPAA-compliant. Not so much for others, however.

For the latter, the clock runs out Sept. 23, which is when the federal agency expects everybody to hop aboard the compliance train. What could be most vexing for the unprepared is a requirement that broadly defines what constitutes a “business associate” of a health-care entity. Who is a business associate?

There are health-care entities – health plans, health-care clearinghouses or health-care providers – who transmit patient information electronically that Reisz says haven’t switched to electronic records because of privacy questions they have about, for instance, how far downstream liability lies.”
