Overview

Karen is a principal for Vorys Advisors LLC, an ancillary business of Vorys.  She provides advice on legislative and executive agency matters to Ohio and national clients.

She is a registered lobbyist before the Ohio General Assembly and provides government relations counsel to clients in a variety of industries.  She represents clients before the state legislature, in the state rule-making process and in administrative and other proceedings before state agencies, boards and commissions and local governmental entities.

Karen also represents health care providers on government relations issues.  She has extensive experience counseling behavioral health and other health care providers in areas related to contracting, privacy, licensure, certification, accreditation and other regulatory issues.

Career highlights include:

  • As Chief Counsel for the Ohio Department of Alcohol and Drug Addiction Services, provided government relations counsel and advised the Director and Department staff regarding regulatory and compliance issues, rule-making, privacy, state contracting, public records, open meetings and other public law issues
  • As an Assistant Attorney General, represented the Ohio Department of Transportation in eminent domain cases, public contracting, rule-making, sunshine laws, public employment and other matters

Karen is a member of the Ohio State Bar Association.

Karen has lectured on the privacy of health care information, federal and state rules governing mental health and substance abuse information, and the federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) rules.  She has also made presentations regarding eminent domain law.

Karen received her J.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Law and her B.A. cum laude from Miami University.

Before joining Vorys Advisors, Karen was of counsel at Vorys, Sater, Seymour and Pease LLP and was a member of the firm's government relations and health care groups.

Previously, Karen served from 1995 to 1999 as Chief Counsel for the Ohio Department of Alcohol and Drug Addiction Services.  She also served from 1989 to 1995 as an Assistant Attorney General representing the Ohio Department of Transportation and other state executive agencies.
