Overview

Jay is a partner in the Vorys Columbus office and a member of the firm’s energy, finance, and real estate group.  His practice and experience span several areas, including oil and gas transactional matters, title review and due diligence, and litigation.  He routinely prepares original title opinions and division order title opinions, lease assignments, amendments, ratifications, and releases; and purchase and sale agreements, operating agreements, and the like for producers.  He also assists producers with regulatory matters and compliance, and regularly represents them before the Ohio Division of Oil and Gas Resources Management.  Jay also litigates claims involving breach of an oil and gas lease, wrongful payment of royalties and title to leasehold properties.

In addition to his general oil and gas practice, Jay is actively involved in the firm’s real estate practice, assisting buyers and sellers with purchase and sale agreements, due diligence, including title and survey review, and title curative.

Jay has authored three chapters for the LexisNexis treatise, Hydraulic Fracturing Law and Practice, and was a key contributor of the 2020 Edition of the Ohio Standards of Title Examination promulgated by the Ohio State Bar Association.  He has also presented on oil and gas issues and is a regular contributor to the Vorys Energy & Environmental Law Blog.  Jay is a member and a trustee of the Energy & Mineral Law Foundation as well as member of the Ohio State Bar Association Real Property Section Council.

Jay received his B.S. cum laude in business management from Grove City College, his J.D. from Duquesne University, and his MBA summa cum laude from Ashland University.  He is admitted to practice in the State of Ohio, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the State of West Virginia as well as the United States District Courts for the Western District of Pennsylvania and Southern District of West Virginia.
