Richard S. Donnell
Mr. Donnell is of counsel in the Vorys Washington, D.C. office and a member of the technology and intellectual property practice group. Mr. Donnell counsels clients in a wide range of industries on all aspects of trademark and copyright protection, enforcement and acquisition of rights. His trademark practice encompasses U.S. and international trademark selection, clearance, prosecution and maintenance, global portfolio management, and litigation before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board. Mr. Donnell works with clients of all sizes from multinational corporations with worldwide trademark holdings to early stage start-ups and emerging technology companies.
Mr. Donnell regularly handles trademark and copyright licensing matters and complex intellectual property agreements, as well as negotiating resolutions of disputed matters. Mr. Donnell advises clients on brand protection on the internet and online trademark and copyright infringement matters related to keyword advertising, social media/networking, online content and virtual worlds. He also handles domain name sales and acquisitions and has represented clients in numerous internet domain name disputes under the UDRP and other dispute resolution policies for generic top-level domains and country-code top-level domains in foreign counties. Mr. Donnell’s practice often involves the business and transactional aspects of intellectual property such as secured lending, franchising and due diligence in mergers, acquisitions, divestitures and restructurings. Earlier in his career, Mr. Donnell worked as a trademark examining attorney with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, where he handled over 10,000 applications and numerous ex parte appeals, and served as a mentoring attorney in the USPTO’s training program for new attorneys.
Mr. Donnell is admitted to practice in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia, and is a member of the Intellectual Property Law Section of the District of Columbia Bar.
Mr. Donnell is a member of the International Trademark Association (INTA) and has spoken and presented materials at INTA’s Roundtable Program on trademark development and prosecution.
Mr. Donnell received his LL.M. with distinction from Georgetown University Law Center, his J.D. from Villanova University School of Law and his B.A. from Dickinson College.
