Paul W. Mengel, III

Mr. Mengel is of counsel in the Vorys Alexandria office and a member of the litigation practice group. He has significant trial and appellate experience and has successfully defended employers in discrimination and wrongful discharge lawsuits in state, federal and appellate courts in numerous jurisdictions, including Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia. Mr. Mengel has also defended Fortune 500 clients in a diverse range of areas, including the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO), wrongful death actions, fraud, breach of contract, covenants not to compete, trade secrets, and the recent wave of mold claims. Mr. Mengel's broad range of civil litigation experience also includes complex medical malpractice and other personal injury claims.
Career highlights include:
- Successfully defending a national restaurant chain in a significant race discrimination case, which clarified the Maryland State Court standard for the award of punitive damages
- Successfully prosecuting a suit to compel a commercial real estate sale which resulted in a landmark opinion in the District of Columbia Court of Appeals clarifying certain rights under the District of Columbia Landlord & Tenant Act
Mr. Mengel is admitted to practice in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia.
Mr. Mengel received his J.D. from George Mason University School of Law and his B.A. from the University of Virginia.
