Richard S. Donnell

Mr. Donnell is an associate in the Vorys Washington, D.C. office and a member of the technology and intellectual property practice group. Mr. Donnell counsels clients on trademark protection, policing, enforcement strategies and acquisition of rights. He also performs domestic and foreign trademark clearance, prosecution, maintenance, and portfolio management. He also advises clients on a wide variety of online infringement matters and domain name issues, including keyword advertising disputes, domain name acquisitions, and Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Proceedings (UDRP).
Mr. Donnell also conducts intellectual property due diligence for acquisitions, public offerings and asset purchase transactions. He prepares and responds to cease and desist letters, negotiates settlement and coexistence agreements, and negotiates and drafts trademark licenses. Mr. Donnell practices before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board and Copyright Office Board of Appeals.
His notable experience includes:
- Working as a trademark examining attorney with the United States Patent and Trademark Office for nearly five years and examining over 10,000 applications for statutory and procedural compliance
- Serving as a mentoring attorney in the Trademark Office's training program for new examining attorneys
Mr. Donnell is a member of the American Bar Association, the Virginia Bar Association, the Maryland State Bar Association, and the District of Columbia Bar. Mr. Donnell is admitted to practice in the District of Columbia.
Mr. Donnell has spoken and presented materials at the International Trademark Association’s Roundtable Program on trademark development and prosecution.
Mr. Donnell received his LL.M. with distinction from Georgetown University Law Center, his J.D. from Villanova University School of Law and his B.A. from Dickinson College.
