A. Brian Dengler

Columbus Office

Mr. Dengler is a partner in the Vorys Columbus office in the technology and intellectual property group.  His practice focuses on commercial transactions and intellectual property issues involving the Internet, electronic commerce, marketing, technology, media, entertainment and mobile media applications.  He also assists clients in consumer-based electronic transactions, e-signatures issues, marketing, and commercial transactions related to international distribution of Internet media content and the sale of assets in Internet and music based services.

Career highlights include:

  • Holding position as Vice President and Associate General Counsel of America Online, Inc. ( AOL LLC), where he served as Chief Counsel of AOL's CompuServe and Netscape Division.  Primarily responsible for preparing consumer electronic agreements (including terms of service for AOL Web and mobile applications, interactive marketing agreements, content distribution agreements), international content distribution agreements, and supervision of AOL bankruptcy portfolio for advertising claims.  Also responsible for supervision of promoting the passage of the Uniform Computer Information Transactions Act in Virginia and Maryland, and Uniform Electronic Transactions Act in Maryland, Ohio and Virginia, the Federal Electronic Signatures in Global and National Commerce Act (E-Sign), and Ohio House Bill 383, Ohio's anti-spam bill, in 2005
  • Advising private colleges and universities on copyright issues
  • Appointment by The Virginia General Assembly to serve on its Advisory Panel No. 5 of the Joint Commission on Technology and Science in 1999, 2000 and 2003 to study and recommend passage of uniform electronic commerce laws for the Commonwealth

Mr. Dengler is a member of the Ohio State Bar Association and the Columbus Bar Association.

Mr. Dengler is an adjunct instructor on performing arts law at the School of Music at Otterbein College.

Mr. Dengler has presented seminars on electric commerce, copyright law and the media and intellectual property for the Law and Media Center of Kent State University, the Ohio State Bar Association, the Practicing Law Institute, and Georgetown University Law Center Continuing Legal Education Division.

Mr. Dengler received his J.D. summa cum laude from Capital University Law School and his B.A. magna cum laude from Kent State University.

Before joining Vorys Mr. Dengler was the vice president and chief counsel of America Online, Inc. (now AOL LLC), where he served as chief counsel for AOL's CompuServe and Netscape divisions and also handled consumer transactions, bankruptcy and government affairs matters for AOL. 

Mr. Dengler is also a former television news reporter and producer for Scripps Howard Broadcasting Company (WEWS-TV Cleveland and WMC-TV Memphis) and WBNS-TV (Channel 10 Columbus, OH.) He earned three EMMY nominations at WBNS and won an EMMY in 1981 as executive producer in the Feature News Category for a special entitled "Kent State: Ten Years After," which was broadcasted on WBNS on May 4, 1980.
